[edit]

Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English.

Hello, the Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects team at Wikimedia Deutschland would like to hear about your experiences using Wikidata in the sibling projects. If you are interested in sharing your opinion and insights, please consider signing up for an interview with us in this Registration form.
Currently, we are only able to conduct interviews in English.

The front page of the form has more details about what the conversation will be like, including how we would compensate you for your time.

For more information, visit our project issue page where you can also share your experiences in written form, without an interview.

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?

[edit]

Apologies for writing in English.

The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.

  • The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
  • Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
  • Compensation is available.
  • Sessions will be held in January and February.
  • Sign up here if you are interested.
  • Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.

We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection

[edit]
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Dear all,

This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.

The Elections Committee will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].

Here are the key planned dates:

  • May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
  • June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
  • June-August 2024: Campaign period
  • End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
  • October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
  • Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated

Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on this Meta-wiki page, and make your plan.

Election Volunteers

Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this Meta-wiki page.

Best regards,

Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

Switching to the Vector 2022 skin

[edit]

Hi everyone. We are the Wikimedia Foundation Web team. As you may have read in our previous messages across wikis or here in June 2022, we have been getting closer to switching every wiki to the Vector 2022 skin as the new default. In our previous conversations with Wikisource communities, we had identified an issue with the Index namespace that prevented switching the skin on. This issue is now resolved.

We are now ready to continue and will be deploying on multilingual Wikisource on Wednesday April 3, 2024.

To learn more about the new skin and what improvements it introduces when compared to the legacy 2010 Vector skin, please see our documentation. If you have any issues with the skin after the deployment, if you spot any gadgets not working, or notice any bugs – please contact us! We are also open to joining events like the Wikisource Community meetings and talking to you directly. Thank you, OVasileva (WMF) and SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 15:52, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the Template:Header is somewhat broken: errors are displayed on the template page: Lua error in Module:Header/year at line 432: bad argument #2 to 'inNamespaces' (unrecognized namespace number '114').Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Submit an edit request' not found.

Also, there is an error on author's pages, for example: Author:Antoine Meyer, also many (or all) other pages -- error is displayed (in the upper right corner): Script error: The function "interprojetPart" does not exist.

I guess, all these things happened after recent multiple imports of templates and modules done by User:Koavf. I think, these error should be fixed, or those imports should be rollbacked (I don't understand why to import so much stuff from another wikisource without any confidence that they would work here, on the multilang-WS, which has completely different set of tools and settings). --Nigmont (talk) 21:17, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dang. I was afraid of this and I looked at the transclusions to see if anything broke. I also looked to see if there is any way to "un-import" in MediaWiki and I didn't find one other than to restore from a database, which seems excessive. I'm open to any instruction on how I can fix this directly. As you can see at Special:Log/import, the following were imported from en.ws:
I see two options:
  1. Reverse engineer each module and template to restore it without the imported revisions (not sure how to do this, but I will try my best)
  2. Import more modules/templates to ensure that they all work the same as en.ws. I will work on this should that be what the consensus is.
I really don't know which one is better and I did try to see what issues there were yesterday and I didn't see any at the time. I'm sorry for any problems anyone is experiencing and I'll put forth the effort to undo them or progress the solution. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:59, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to fix the errors and reverted 3 units to their previous stable states:
19:58, 10 April 2024 diff hist −8,187 Module:Plain sister reverting to the previous stable state (of 27 July 2020, 00:58 UTC) current

19:45, 10 April 2024 diff hist +10,585 Template:Header reverting to the previous stable state (of 12 June 2021, 01:25 UTC) current
Looks like some errors have disappeared, also the author's page seem to be fixed now. --Nigmont (talk) 20:24, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Author

[edit]

Since yesterday morning the template author doesn't work properly. it appears this sentence: Script error: The function "interprojetPart" does not exist Is it possible correct it? thank you-- Sorry, I hadn't seen that you noticed the error! I don't understand what to do. Mizardellorsa (talk) 16:01, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that you just need to wait for some days until someone figures out what to do in order to resolve the problem. Most likely you wouldn't remove the error by just changing arguments in the template invocation, something else needs to be changed in the template, and/or modules (or other entities) that are used by it. --Nigmont (talk) 22:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to fix the errors and reverted 3 units to their previous stable states:

Sign up for the language community meeting on May 31st, 16:00 UTC

[edit]

Hello all,

The next language community meeting is scheduled in a few weeks - May 31st at 16:00 UTC. If you're interested, you can sign up on this wiki page.

This is a participant-driven meeting, where we share language-specific updates related to various projects, collectively discuss technical issues related to language wikis, and work together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, the topics included the machine translation service (MinT) and the languages and models it currently supports, localization efforts from the Kiwix team, and technical challenges with numerical sorting in files used on Bengali Wikisource.

Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates related to your project? Any problems that you would like to bring for discussion during the meeting? Do you need interpretation support from English to another language? Please reach out to me at ssethi(__AT__)wikimedia.org and add agenda items to the document here.

We look forward to your participation!

Importing templates from English Wikisource

[edit]

Multilingual Wikisource is sometimes lacking in important templates or the templates seem to not match other wikis in features. this is something that I want to see fixed, such as in templates as in {{Information}} and {{Header}}, among others I can list. JnpoJuwan (talk) 10:50, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We indeed need to reuse templates, but for Intl Wikisource them should be at least multilingual. Nyuhn (talk) 06:12, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear community members,

The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees invites you to give feedback on a draft Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle. This draft Procedure outlines proposed steps and requirements for opening and closing Wikimedia Sibling Projects, and aims to ensure any newly approved projects are set up for success. This is separate from the procedures for opening or closing language versions of projects, which is handled by the Language Committee or closing projects policy.

You can find the details on this page, as well as the ways to give your feedback from today until the end of the day on June 23, 2024, anywhere on Earth.

You can also share information about this with the interested project communities you work with or support, and you can also help us translate the procedure into more languages, so people can join the discussions in their own language.

User not here to build a better free library

[edit]

As I am willing to eventually process Wikisource:Proposed deletions#Wikisource:Jimbo Wales against attacks on userpages, would everyone please note why @Zhxy 519: might not have been here to build a better free library? Imagine how bad repetitively reverting the well sourced deadminship four times to illegally keep the adminship on Chinese Wikisource [141] [142] [143] [144] would be. This may tempt some users from Chinese Wikisource to "seek asylum" here, like Wikisource:Proposed deletions#All documents uploaded by User:Sowhat666 that I will further examine. Thanks to all of my dear fellow administrators for not deleting either controversial request too fast. Having worked together here for so many years has been so nice. Sorry for the bad story from Chinese Wikisource spreading here and the delay posting this section as I was busier elsewhere with more important things, including administering 13 wikis. Hopefully things will get better. but we need more time seeking more effective supports.--Jusjih (talk) 00:24, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Despite no recent act here, Zhxy 519 behaved questionably again at zh:Wikisource:写字间#修改認定長期不活動管理員之時限標準(縮短目前標準改為3個月) by excessively blocking someone with his illegal adminship with a wheel war. If no one objects, I may consider opening a subpage about this matter.--Jusjih (talk) 16:16, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to Koavf for having fairly closed many cases.--Jusjih (talk) 00:03, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with subpages

[edit]

Today I noticed that some problems appeared on newly-created subpages, for example: Якстере теште/1924/25/Не тевтнеде парстэ эряви содамс волисполкомтнэнень, also recently edited subpages, for example Якстере теште/1924/06/Месть корты эрзянь аграном:

  • Category 'Subpages' appeared in the page's categories list, since there are no such category in the Wikisource for now, that category is "red"
  • The subpage page is not included in the year category Category:1924 works, as I expected

It seems to me that it is somewhat connected with recently implemented changes announced and discussed in the topic above: Relative paths. Also, it should be noticed that such problems have not yet occurred on similar pages (of the same newspaper) — for example Якстере теште/1924/25/"Кода сюронь тефне молить": that page does not have "red" category 'Subpages' and it is still included in the Category:1924 works.

Can someone comment on these issues (and fix it, if it is possible and needed)? Jon Harald Søby: since you created that change: could you be of help with these problems? --Nigmont (talk) 22:29, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nigmont: Well, it is and isn't related. All of these category changes actually come from Template:Header-myv (which you created, but it seems you copied it from Template:Header), and that template has checks (via Template:Is subpage) for whether or not a page is a subpage, and categorizes differently based on that. I haven't looked into who added that when, but it must have been intentional (but non-functional on this wiki until the subpages were enabled) – if we want, we can remove those checks to get the "old" behaviour back. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:15, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby: thanks for explanation. Yes, you are right: I created that template as a copy (partial) from Template:Header, so it inherited some behavior of that template. I resolved these problems — I created hidden Category:Subpages so it is not displayed on the content pages; and I removed in Template:Header-myv piece of code which had suppressed categorizing subpages in year categories. So it seems to be fine now. Nigmont (talk) 20:29, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Please help translate to your language

Hello all,

A special election has been called to fill additional vacancies on the U4C. The call for candidates phase is open from now through July 19, 2024.

The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is a global group dedicated to providing an equitable and consistent implementation of the UCoC. Community members are invited to submit their applications in the special election for the U4C. For more information and the responsibilities of the U4C, please review the U4C Charter.

In this special election, according to chapter 2 of the U4C charter, there are 9 seats available on the U4C: four community-at-large seats and five regional seats to ensure the U4C represents the diversity of the movement. No more than two members of the U4C can be elected from the same home wiki. Therefore, candidates must not have English Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, or Italian Wikipedia as their home wiki.

Read more and submit your application on Meta-wiki.

Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting results

[edit]
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Please help translate to your language

Hello everyone,

After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.

As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.

The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:

Individual vote:

Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).

Affiliates vote:

Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).

Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted not to ratify the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv, shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps.

With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is not ratified.

We thank you for your participation in this important moment in our movement’s governance.

The Charter Electoral Commission,

Abhinav619, Borschts, Iwuala Lucy, Tochiprecious, Der-Wir-Ing

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!

[edit]

Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.

We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:

Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.

Please help us spread the message. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 10:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Admin intervention needed for user page vandalism

[edit]

A user has posted on the Administrators Noticeboard on enWS looking for administrator assistance here on mulWS. Since mulWS lacks a dedicated admin noticeboard they were unable to locate the appropriate venue here.

The user's user page has been targeted by a vandal (as was previously their user talk page) with fairly distasteful (if obviously false) insults. I have edited it to hide the old revision, but the page needs to be deleted (it has no other history) and both the user page and user talk page semi-protected ("Allow only autoconfirmed") from being created (aka. "salted"). They state in their enWS AN post that they do not plan to be active on this project in the near future so semi-protection (or even fully-protected) user pages should be no inconvenience to anyone.

Re: Switching to the Vector 2022 skin

[edit]
A two minute-long video about Vector 2022

Hello everyone, I'm reaching out on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Web team responsible for the MediaWiki skins. I'd like to revisit the topic of making Vector 2022 the default here on multilingual Wikisource. I did post a message about this in March, but we didn't finalize it back then.

What happened in the meantime? We built dark mode and different options for font sizes and made Vector 2022 the default on most wikis. With the not-so-new V22 skin being the default, existing and coming features, like dark mode and temporary accounts respectively, will become available for logged-out users here.

So, if no large concerns are raised, we will deploy Vector 2022 here in two weeks, in the week of September 16. Do let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Preliminary results of the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections

[edit]

Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. Close to 6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

The following four candidates were the most voted:

  1. Christel Steigenberger
  2. Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz
  3. Victoria Doronina
  4. Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in December 2024.

Update on language categorisation

[edit]

I want to suggest, to admins and other fellow editors, an overhaul to how the categorisation of languages currently work. currently, all the languages have no cohesive naming system, some have the language code, some have the native name, some have the English name, some have a combination of the previous three.

I propose taking inspiration from English Wiktionary and have language codes mark these pages. category titles may be "xx:title", where xx is a specific language code. similarly, for page translations (like the main page), it may be "page/xx". some examples:

the titles themselves may be in the native language or, maybe less ideally to some, in English. the examples above are in English because I don't speak Afrikaans or Sardinian. JnpoJuwan (talk) 16:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

pinging @Koavf, @Mahagaja, @Ooswesthoesbes, @Yann as the most active admins. JnpoJuwan (talk) 16:38, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have argued in favor of standardizing and landed on the "Language code/native name/English name" standard you have for Afrikaans. Others thought that unilaterally imposing a standard was not wise, so I stopped. I am in favor of more-or-less any scheme that makes these consistent. —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:51, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm definitely in favor of some form of standardization using the language code, which is the most unambiguous way of identifying a language. —Mahāgaja · talk 17:27, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in favour of standardisation, but I'd advise against using "code:English" (like sc:Authors). In many case, the languages will get their own domain later on, and that would require moving everything to the native title after importing, which is a horrendously demotivating hurdle to get over.
I personally like the way Incubator does it, simply: code/title (like sc/Autores). This way, you can get all pages of a single language in the PrefixIndex as well. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 18:31, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooswesthoesbes either the Wiktionary- or Incubator-styles are good. I would accept either one. and that's a good note that I was thinking about, good to keep it in the native language. JnpoJuwan (talk) 18:45, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that whether the colon notation (Category:sc:Authors) or the slash version (Category:sc/Autores) is chosen, they will result in the first letter of the language code being capitalized (hover over the above links to see it). It’s different from what happens on Wiktionary and Incubator because
  • on Wiktionary, first letters of page titles aren’t capitalized (so that wikt:author and wikt:Author are different entries), and
  • on Incubator, the language code is not at the very beginning of the title (it’s prefixed with the project code – which doesn’t make sense on Wikisource, since everything is Wikisource here).
IMHO this doesn’t look nice, although I don’t have any better idea right now. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:28, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tacsipacsi I did have this in mind but ignored it as that's not a huge issue to me. JnpoJuwan (talk) 19:13, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Capitalisation of the code is no issue to me either. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 08:01, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Swahili Wikisource

[edit]

Currently both Multilingual Wikisource (Main Page/Kiswahili) and Swahili Wikipedia (sw:w:Wikichanzo:Mwanzo) claim to be hosting Swahili Wikisource, and both sites have pages not on the other site. This duplication should probably be cleaned up. Pppery (talk) 06:12, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed in pciniple. This was also brought up at incubator: and is on my to-do. The problem is that some editions of Wikisource have more restrictive about what they allow, so there may be some reason for the Swahili community not porting over certain works. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:59, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sign up for the language community meeting on November 29th, 16:00 UTC

[edit]

Hello everyone,

The next language community meeting is coming up next week, on November 29th, at 16:00 UTC (Zonestamp! For your timezone <https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1732896000>). If you're interested in joining, you can sign up on this wiki page: <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Language_and_Product_Localization/Community_meetings#29_November_2024>.

This participant-driven meeting will be organized by the Wikimedia Foundation’s Language Product Localization team and the Language Diversity Hub. There will be presentations on topics like developing language keyboards, the creation of the Moore Wikipedia, and the language support track at Wiki Indaba. We will also have members from the Wayuunaiki community joining us to share their experiences with the Incubator and as a new community within our movement. This meeting will have a Spanish interpretation.

Looking forward to seeing you at the language community meeting! Cheers, Srishti 19:54, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
