Community Wishlist Survey 2022
[edit]The Community Wishlist Survey 2022 is now open!
This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 23 January, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 28 January and 11 February.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A
oauth_consumer
variable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [1] - Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [2]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,history
will load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [3] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadget
URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJS
orwithCSS
. [4] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [5]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [6] [7]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [8]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 January. It will be on all wikis from 13 January (calendar).

Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections is now open
[edit]The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 7 16 February 2022.
With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.
Best regards,
Movement Strategy and Governance

- Please note an additional question has now been added. There are also several proposals from participants to review and discuss. Xeno (WMF) (talk) 00:37, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
Question about the Affiliates' role for the Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections
[edit]Hi All,
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections so far. The Movement Strategy and Governance team has announced the last key question:
How should affiliates participate in elections?
Affiliates are an important part of the Wikimedia movement. Two seats of the Board of Trustees due to be filled this year were filled in 2019 through the Affiliate-selected Board seats process. A change in the Bylaws removed the distinction between community and affiliate seats. This leaves the important question: How should affiliates be involved in the selection of new seats?
The question is broad in the sense that the answers may refer not just to the two seats mentioned, but also to other, Community- and Affiliate-selected seats. The Board is hoping to find an approach that will both engage the affiliates and give them actual agency, and also optimize the outcomes in terms of selecting people with top skills, experience, diversity, and wide community’s support.
The Board of Trustees is seeking feedback about this question especially, although not solely, from the affiliate community. Everyone is invited to share proposals and join the conversation in the Call for Feedback channels. In addition to collecting online feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team will organize several video calls with affiliate members to collect feedback. These calls will be at different times and include Trustees.
Due to the late addition of this third question, the Call will be extended until 16 February.
Best regards,
Movement Strategy and Governance

Recent changes
- When using WikiEditor (also known as the 2010 wikitext editor), people will now see a warning if they link to disambiguation pages. If you click "Review link" in the warning, it will ask you to correct the link to a more specific term. You can read more information about this completed 2021 Community Wishlist item.
- You can automatically subscribe to all of the talk page discussions that you start or comment in using DiscussionTools. You will receive notifications when another editor replies. This is available at most wikis. Go to your Preferences and turn on "Automatically subscribe to topics". [9]
- When asked to create a new page or talk page section, input fields can be "preloaded" with some text. This feature is now limited to wikitext pages. This is so users can't be tricked into making malicious edits. There is a discussion about if this feature should be re-enabled for some content types.

Desktop Improvements update and Office Hours invitation
[edit]Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years.
The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more.
The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on 24 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.
The changes apply to the Vector skin only. Monobook or Timeless users are not affected.
Features deployed since our last update
[edit]- User menu - focused on making the navigation more intuitive by visually highlighting the structure of user links and their purpose.
- Sticky header - focused on allowing access to important functionality (logging in/out, history, talk pages, etc.) without requiring people to scroll to the top of the page.
For a full list of the features the project includes, please visit our project page. We also invite you to our Updates page.
How to enable the improvements
[edit]- It is possible to opt-in individually in the appearance tab within the preferences by unchecking the "Use Legacy Vector" box. (It has to be empty.) Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
- If you think this would be good as a default for all readers and editors of this wiki, feel free to start a conversation with the community and contact me.
- On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

Remember to Participate in the UCoC Conversations and Ratification Vote!
[edit]Hello everyone,
A vote in SecurePoll from 7 to 21 March 2022 is scheduled as part of the ratification process for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) Enforcement guidelines. Eligible voters are invited to answer a poll question and share comments. Read voter information and eligibility details. During the poll, voters will be asked if they support the enforcement of the Universal Code of Conduct based on the proposed guidelines.
The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire movement. The revised enforcement guidelines were published 24 January 2022 as a proposed way to apply the policy across the movement. A Wikimedia Foundation Board statement calls for a ratification process where eligible voters will have an opportunity to support or oppose the adoption of the UCoC Enforcement guidelines in a vote. Wikimedians are invited to translate and share important information. For more information about the UCoC, please see the project page and frequently asked questions on Meta-wiki.
There are events scheduled to learn more and discuss:
- A community panel on 18 February 2022 at 15:00 UTC shares perspectives from small- and medium-sized community participants.
- The Movement Strategy and Governance (MSG) team is hosting Conversation Hours on 25 February 2022 at 12:00 UTC and 4 March 2022 at 15:00 UTC. Please sign-up for these conversation hours to interact with the project team and the drafting committee about the updated enforcement guidelines and the ratification process. See the Conversation Hour summaries for notes from 4 February 2022.
You can comment on Meta-wiki talk pages in any language. You may also contact either team by email: msgwikimedia.org or ucocprojectwikimedia.org

Recent changes
- Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [15]
- At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [16]
- You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup
class=notpageimage
. For example,[[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]
. [17] - There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.
Events
- Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 February. It will be on all wikis from 24 February (calendar).
Future changes
- The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [18][19]
- Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [20]
- Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [21]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [22][23]
- The user group
oversight
was renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [24]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox
), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia Android app it is now possible to change the toolbar at the bottom so the tools you use more often are easier to click on. The app now also has a focused reading mode. [26][27]
Problems
- There was a problem with the collection of some page-view data from June 2021 to January 2022 on all wikis. This means the statistics are incomplete. To help calculate which projects and regions were most affected, relevant datasets are being retained for 30 extra days. You can read more on Meta-wiki.
- There was a problem with the databases on March 10. All wikis were unreachable for logged-in users for 12 minutes. Logged-out users could read pages but could not edit or access uncached content then. [28]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).
- When using
uselang=qqx
to find localisation messages, it will now show all possible message keys for navigation tabs such as "View history". [29] - Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have
deletelogentry
anddeletedhistory
rights through their group memberships. Before, only those with thedeleterevision
right could access this special page. [30] - On the Special:Undelete pages for diffs and revisions, there will be a link back to the main Undelete page with the list of revisions. [31]
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Foundation has announced the IP Masking implementation strategy and next steps. The announcement can be read here.
- The Wikipedia Android app developers are working on new functions for user talk pages and article talk pages. [32]
Events
- The Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 will take place as a hybrid event on 20-22 May 2022. The Hackathon will be held online and there are grants available to support local in-person meetups around the world. Grants can be requested until 20 March.

Update on Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines ratification vote
[edit]Hi all,
With about 2 days left in the poll, I can share that there are 1600 voters as of 18 March 23:20 UTC.
Being aware that homewiki isn't always indicative of where an editor is active, I would still like to remind everyone that diversity matters and that local opinions are sought in this global decision. It would be beneficial to see the comments about the Enforcement Guidelines given from the perspective of this project, even if wikisource is not your your homewiki.
You can access the voting page locally on https://wikisource.org/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/378
You can look at the votership numbers on this page
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Template:nop does not work as expected
[edit]Template:nop is the template that forces a new paragraph for pages transcluded from the Page:
namespace, but as seen in Template:Nop/testcases#How it works right now, the template does not work as of writing this (Template:Nop/testcases#How it should work). I think it needs some fixing but I do not want to break it for other works so I would like someone more experienced in here to look into and fix it. --Bebiezaza (talk) 11:42, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

UCoC Enforcement Guidelines - Voting results
[edit]Hi all!
I want to inform you that the majority of Wikimedians have voted in favour of the proposed Guidelines for implementing the Universal Code of Conduct.
- A total of 2348 community members took part in the vote.
Of that number, 1338 voted Yes and 945 No. There were 65 undecided votes.
- What does this result mean?
- It means that there is enough support for the WMF Board of Trustees to review the Guidelines. It does not mean that the ratification process is complete.
- What happens next?
- 1. The UCoC project team will collate and summarise the comments provided in the voting process and publish them on Meta-wiki;
- 2. The Board of Trustees will review the text of the Guidelines and comments given during the vote to determine if any aspects need to be revised.
- What are the possible outcomes?
- 1. If the Board of Trustees concludes that there are aspects of the Guidelines that need further refinement, these comments, as well as suggestions from the community discussions, will provide a good starting point for the revision.
- 2. If the Board of Trustees decides to proceed with ratification, the UCoC project team will begin supporting specific proposals in the Guidelines.
You can find more details about the results and the accompanying statistics on this page. A summary of the voters' comments will be available on the same page.
Kind regards,

Any community member can become a candidate if they meet the general and special conditions outlined here. - Affiliates vote to shortlist six (6) names from the candidates' pool.
Each affiliate carries one vote. The affiliate vote is scheduled to take place in early July. - The Community votes to elect two of the six shortlisted candidates.
Community Voting is scheduled to begin on August 15 and end on August 29. - The Board will appoint the two newly-elected candidates as the new Trustees.
This final step, which will conclude the election process, is expected to take place in early October 2022.

Coming soon: Improvements for templates
[edit]Hello, more changes around templates are coming to your wiki soon:
The template dialog in VisualEditor and in the 2017 Wikitext Editor (beta) will be improved fundamentally: This should help users understand better what the template expects, how to navigate the template, and how to add parameters.
In syntax highlighting (CodeMirror extension), you can activate a colorblind-friendly color scheme with a user setting.
Deployment is planned for May 10. This is the last set of improvements from WMDE Technical Wishes' focus area “Templates”.
We would love to hear your feedback on our talk pages!

How to start a Santali language test Wikisource project
[edit]Hi, Myself Prasanta. I mostly remain active in Santali Wikipedia. Many of my friends have collected some Santali books written in Ol Chiki script Ashwani collection, which they have dedicated to various cc licenses. I was thinking of adding them to Wikisource. Because these books are in different language I cannot add it to other languages. Can anyone guide me how to start a test Wikisource for Santali language. Thanks Rocky 734 (talk) 07:35, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Rocky 734: Unlike all of the other sister projects, there is no language committee approval to start an edition of Wikisource: you can begin adding texts here immediately as long as they fit our scope and are appropriately licensed. It's great if you have more editors and make a main page in that language, etc. as well. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 07:48, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

redirect to language Wikisource
[edit]Can anyone please explain how I can create a redirect to a language Wikisource here?
I want to make a redirect from: The Sundering Flood to English Wikisource. I need this page because in Open Library I can only make a link to this (old) Wikisource. Or do I make a mistake somewhere? --Dick Bos (talk) 07:25, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- So Open Library does not directly allow linking to English Wikisource? It looks strange.--Jusjih (talk) 03:42, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Dick Bos: Just put the language prefix in front of the page name. OL will link here to mulWS, which will then redirect to enWS, without needing an on-wiki redirect page. But note that OL is badly neglected by the IA, and their interest is more with getting us to link to them than the other way around. Xover (talk) 12:21, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Xover: Thank you for that. I think I did something wrong, but now it works! --Dick Bos (talk) 13:20, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
Desktop Improvements update
[edit]- Making this the new default
Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years. Our work is almost finished! 🎉
We would love to see these improvements become the default for readers and editors across all wikis. In the coming weeks, we will begin conversations on more wikis, including yours. 🗓️ We will gladly read your suggestions!
The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more. The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on more than 30 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.
The changes apply to the Vector skin only, although it will always be possible to revert to the previous version on an individual basis. Monobook or Timeless users will not notice any changes.
- The newest features
- Table of contents - our version is easier to reach, gain context of the page, and navigate throughout the page without needing to scroll. It is currently tested across our pilot wikis. It is also available for editors who have opted into the Vector 2022 skin.
- Page tools - now, there are two types of links in the sidebar. There are actions and tools for individual pages (like Related changes) and links of the wiki-wide nature (like Recent changes). We are going to separate these into two intuitive menus.
- How to enable/disable the improvements
- It is possible to opt-in individually in the appearance tab within the preferences by selecting "Vector (2022)". Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
- On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.
- Learn more and join our events
If you would like to follow the progress of our project, you can subscribe to our newsletter. You can read the pages of the project, check our FAQ, write on the project talk page, and join an online meeting with us.
Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 16:59, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- Join us on Tuesday

The meeting will not be recorded or streamed. Notes will be taken in a Google Docs file and copied to Etherpad. Olga Vasileva (the Product Manager) will be hosting this meeting. The presentation part will be given in English. At this meeting, both Friendly space policy and the Code of Conduct for Wikimedia technical spaces apply. Board of Trustees election 2022 -- Election Compass
[edit]Hi all,
The 2022 Board of Trustees elections are from 16 August 2022 to 30 August 2022.
Members of the Wikimedia community have the opportunity to elect two candidates to a three-year term.
To make the election process more straightforward and to help the community members make informed decisions about candidates they want to support, we have prepared a tool called Election Compass.
How does the Election Compass work?
The Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering their answers to the statements (agree/neutral/disagree). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.
Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:
- July 8 - 20: Community members propose statements for the Election Compass
- July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
- July 25 - August 3: Volunteers vote on the statements
- August 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
- August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
- August 16: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision
Thank you!

- I'm guessing this is the right place - but this WMF-banned obsessive pest is back on Template:Table style/parse - could someone please protect the page (blocking the IPs is useful, but not essential, as they are always throwaway P2P proxies), and please revdel the absurd libels. Thank you in advance - Antandrus (talk) 17:53, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ah, it goes here. Anyway, now at Talk:Main Page/Русский. Nonsense creation. Styyx (talk) 21:26, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

Vote for your favourite Wikimedia sound logo
[edit]Please help translate to your language
Voting in the Wikimedia sound logo contest has started. From December 6 to 19, 2022, please play a part and help chose the sound that will identify Wikimedia content on audio devices. Learn more on Diff.
The sound logo team is grateful to everyone who participated in this global contest. We received 3,235 submissions from 2,094 participants in 135 countries. We are incredibly grateful to the team of volunteer screeners and the selection committee who, among others, helped bring us to where we are today. It is now up to Wikimedia to choose the Sound Of All Human Knowledge.
Best wishes, Arupako-WMF (talk) 15:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
Tech News: 2022-51
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2023.
Recent changes
- On a user's contributions page, you can filter it for edits with a tag like 'reverted'. Now, you can also filter for all edits that are not tagged like that. This was part of a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [152]
- A new function has been used for gadget developers to add content underneath the title on article pages. This is considered a stable API that should work across all skins. Documentation is available. [153]
- One of our test wikis is now being served from a new infrastructure powered by Kubernetes (read more). More Wikis will switch to this new infrastructure in early 2023. Please test and let us know of any issues. [154]
Problems
- Last week, all wikis had no edit access for 9 minutes. This was caused by a database problem. [155]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
- The word "Reply" is very short in some languages, such as Arabic ("ردّ"). This makes the Discussion tools button on talk pages difficult to use. An arrow icon will be added to those languages. This will only be visible to editors who have the Beta Feature turned on. [156] [157]
Future changes
- Edits can be automatically "tagged" by the system software or the Abuse filter management system. Those tags link to a help page about the tags. Soon they will also link to Recent Changes to let you see other edits tagged this way. This was a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [158]
- The Trust & Safety tools team have shared new plans for building the Private Incident Reporting System. The system will make it easier for editors to ask for help if they are harassed or abused.
- Realtime Preview for Wikitext is coming out of beta as an enabled feature for every user of the 2010 Wikitext editor in the week of January 9, 2023. It will be available to use via the toolbar in the 2010 Wikitext editor. The feature was the 4th most popular wish of the Community Wishlist Survey 2021.
Events
- You can now register for the Wikimedia Hackathon 2023, taking place on May 19–21 in Athens, Greece. You can also apply for a scholarship until January 14th.
