Bio

I am an anthropologist, PhD in political and social sciences, guest lecturer and activist for free culture and open science. My interests in anthropology focus on the digital realm, anarchism and prospective studies.

Son of a factory worker father and an independent hairdresser mother, I was born in Nivelles in January 1969 within a humanity that, forty-five years later, had doubled in size. My childhood took place in Frasnes-lez-Gosselies in the company of my parents, my brother, and my sister. I later lived in different regions of Belgium and the world.

During my secondary studies, I studied forestry, tropical agronomy and aeronautics. My professional career began in Guinea, as an agroforestry advisor, and continued in Belgium as an animator, cartographer and artist.

At 38, I began a bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology at the Free University of Brussels which I completed as an Erasmus student at the University of Coimbra. I continued with a master's degree in anthropology at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve during which I completed a thesis entitled: Culture fr.Wikipedia.

After my master's, I became interested in video production and editing while getting involved in politics within the Pirate Party of Belgium. An experience that allowed me to understand how the Belgian political system works, which I consider flawed because of the electoral system and the distribution of power between political parties. Setting politics aside, I then invested more in my life as a father and in various citizen projects, while completing a university certificate in economic and social ethics.

From July 2017 to June 2022, I completed a PhD in political and social science within the laboratory of prospective anthropology at UCLouvain. My thesis was dedicated to the en:Wikimedia movement and published "in real time" on the French Wikiversity site, under the title: Imagine a world. When the Wikimedia movement helps us think prospectively about tomorrow's global and digital society.

After my PhD, I published a Wikibook based on the first three chapters of my thesis entitled: The Wikimedia movement, Last Sharing Place of a free and authentic knowledge?, which is a general presentation of the Wikimedia movement from its origins and its links with the counterculture of the 1960s. Following this, I taught at UCLouvain by giving lectures in several faculties, and as a guest lecturer for a seminar on digital anthropology while completing a university certificate in economic and social ethics.

Within the Wikimedia movement, which I joined in 2011, I am mainly interested in questions of society, culture, philosophy, and politics. I do this mainly by being active on Wikiversity and Wikibooks, two projects for which I have administrative responsibilities. My contributions within the other Wikimedia projects are more modest and take place as I read and when time and inclination permit.

My offline activities in the movement began in early 2013, with a first participation in the Wikimania conference cycle in August 2014 in London. After which, in November 2014, I became a founding member of the Wikimedia Belgium association, in which I was an administrator from 2017 to 2019.
