Hello Ankry, welcome to the multilingual Wikisource! Thanks for your interest in the project; we hope you'll enjoy the community and your work here.

This wiki is the original Wikisource wiki, originally hosting works in many languages. The larger collections have been spawned into separate projects, leaving this wiki to serve as a central collaboration point, and as an environment where works without a language subdomain can be started. Refer to our languages list to see which languages still reside on this wiki. You can find a list of the separate language projects on the main page or here and you may want to look at the our coordination page for limitations on placing certain works on the separate language projects.

Most questions and discussions about the community are in the Scriptorium.

The Community Portal lists tasks you can help with if you wish. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page!

Unsourced works

[edit]

Do we have a template for unsourced works? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:49, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

@ShakespeareFan00 AFAIK, no. Ankry (talk) 07:55, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Is there a template that could be imported, so that we can avoid proposed deletions by having a policy on removal of unsourced (and unlicensed works)?ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:57, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
@ShakespeareFan00 Just importing a template does not mean unsourced works may be speedydeleted. Also, for PD books source is irrelevant. Books are sources themself. Ankry (talk) 08:04, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
That may be your view, but without the source information and a formal license statment, it can be very hard to determine that the work is indeed under a compatible ’free license’ or in the public domain. In any case the works that can be proven should be moved to Commons. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:06, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, for works that are PD in origin country: they shold be moved to commons, and then deleted. Pre-1923 works should be investigated more carefully. Ankry (talk) 08:35, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Korczak po przeniesieniu

[edit]

witam,
Dzieci ulicy), Strony w przestrzeni Strona i Indeksy utworów Korczaka? Takie rozdwojenie utworów, w różnych stadiach "rozwoju" jest niekorzystne.
Zdzislaw (talk) 12:13, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Tak. Nie miałem czasu tego przejrzeć. W wolnej chwili usunę. Jak chcesz to zekuj. Ankry (talk) 18:30, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Zdzislaw (talk) 11:00, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I uploaded the front page of my first book which was published in the year of 2006 and got best book award from Andhra Pradesh Urdu Academy (Literary Award) ,I would like to upload the whole book for that I need your help , if it is possible please help me103.245.198.202

@IMAM QASIM SAQI, 103.245.198.202: A 2006 book is copyrighted and its cover cannot be stored in Wikimedia projects without a written free license permission unless the book was published under C-BY-SA 3.0-compatible license (you provided no proof for that on the image description page).
Moreover, only scans that are in public domain in US (generally, published before 1.1.1923) and not in public domain in the source country are in Wikisource.org scope. Any other images used in this project should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
We collect texts, not images. Images are used here only as (1) the source of text or (2) text illustrations, so again out of Wikisource.org scope as we not have text of this book under CC-BU-SA 3.0-compatible license. Ankry (talk) 16:04, 12 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Anti-spam nonsense

[edit]

Trying to add anything to Wikisource talk:ProofreadPage is automatically dismissed as spam.
What is going on around here?
Sincerely, Varlaam (talk) 09:05, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

It appears to be a Catch-22.
You can't add an edit unless you already have an edit.
Varlaam (talk)
@Varlaam: thanks for your report; the filter you triggered is a new one imported from mediawiki wiki and likely not fully suitable for wikisource. Probably, some rules needs to be modified after roports like yours (we were warned the filter triggers also false positives). Can you retry your previously rejected edit or mail me its content to help us to improve the filter? The babel you just created should never trigger the filter. Ankry (talk) 10:32, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi.
The Babel fixed the problem, by allowing me to have 1 edit.
Before that, I could not edit Wikisource:ProofreadPage, Wikisource talk:ProofreadPage, or your Talk page here.
Thanks, Varlaam (talk) 18:05, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I have added the missing '.' which was my original problem.

@Varlaam: Thanks again. Such edits by new users should no longer trigger the spam filter. Ankry (talk) 18:34, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help with harassment by cs.wikisource admins

@Izaskun.etxeberria: Just ask any admin for deletion after you upload it to Wikimedia Commons. I suggest using the same filename there. The file is not a big problem here. Just it is easier to keep the project clean if files are in proper locations. Ankry (talk) 14:53, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Help with Transclusion

Hello! I have transcluded Bukvar staroslovenskoga jezika glagolskimi pismeni za čitanje crkvenih knjig. Most of the text is good, but some of the footnotes have disappeared, and many images do not line up or are too big or too small. If you have time, could you give me any suggestions?

@Inatan: You may need to set image width or height like height like here (without initial x it means width). What do you mean by "disappeared footnotes" ?
Did you consider splitting the text into few pages (sections)? Ankry (talk) 19:36, 28 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ankry File:ჰასან რუმლუ - 1966.pdf and File:ისქანდერ მუნში - 1969.pdf from public library sites in Georgia unsigned message by User:Giakosh

@Giakosh: Being freely available does not mean "not copyrighted". Texts with unclear US copyright status should not be upladed here. Moreover, copyright status in Georgia may be generally irrelevant here. However, as Georgia signed the Berne Convention, copyright status of these texts in Georgia on 1.1.1996 may be relevant (see this table) for US copyright status. If the texts are really PD, we need a clear explanation why (basing on copyright law) they are PD. Pure declaration (by a non-author) that a book is PD is just void. Can you prove that the author of these books died before 1.1.1926? Ankry (talk) 18:46, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

hello Ankry

Autor of File:ჰასან რუმლუ - 1966.pdf is ḤASAN BEG RUMLU w:ru:Хасан-бек Румлу (1531-1580). His work was translated and publiced in Georgia at 1966 y.

Autor of File:ისქანდერ მუნში - 1969.pdf is Iskandar Beg Munshi w:ru:Искандер Мунши(1560-1634). His work was translated and publiced in Georgia at 1969 y.

unsigned message by User:Giakosh

@Giakosh: Translators are considered to be authors as well. Unless Georgian copyright law states otherwise. Did translators also die before 1926? Anonymous works from 1960-ties are copyrighted in US 95 years from publication, unless Geogrian pre-1996 law states otherwise.

You should explain that here, not only for me.

Table of contents in Index namespace

[edit]

…not the one generated by Mediawiki.

Hello. Is that possible to increase to 50% the remarks cell in the table of MediaWiki talk:Proofreadpage index template? In French Wikisource, we have an input cell (textarea), called Sommaire (summary ?) especially for the table of contents of the book (for example). Here not, we only have the remarks cell witch is too tight (only 30%), see here. Have you got an idea to improve that ? Thanks in advance. Reptilien.19831209BE1 (talk) 14:59, 8 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Reptilien.19831209BE1: I think, this may be a good idea to have a wider ToC. However, I am unsure if just extending the "Remarks" field in the table is the right way to do that.
  1. IMO, ToC should be rather a separate field
  2. Some people are not using a ToC. So having half-empty screen may be discouraged by them.
I will think about converting the "Proofreadpage index template" from a rigid table to few <div style="diplay:table"> areas that may result in better and more flexible structure of the whole page. The change will also require a discussion in Scriptorium. Please, remind me about this in a week if no further input from me in this matter.
At the moment, you can try to extend the ToC manually, eg. adding something like "width:50em;" of "min-width:50em;" to the <div> style. Ankry (talk) 15:35, 8 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm not hurry, I will wait that things are done properly. I didn't think adding a ToC field was possible, it's a better idea. Ok for the reminding! Thanks. Reptilien.19831209BE1 (talk) 16:04, 8 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, I would appreciate if you would stalk my edits for the first month or so since I will often make minor mistakes. Some templates exist on en. that do not exist here, or commons needs different categorization than here; there are no header/footer sections when editing a Page:, That stuff. Thanks. Lemuritus (talk) 18:51, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lemuritus: Well, I am not very active here, but feel free to ask me if you have any question. If a template that you need does not exist, then you can create it; but please create only templates that you need to use and note that this project is multilingual so many templates may exist under non-English names. Unsure what do you mean about categorization. The header/footer sections do exist in any page created her, but they may be not visible by default. You may need to enable them per all pages in your Preferences (Editing tab) or per page using the appropriate button from the toolbar (Proofread tools subtoolbar). Please remember to add a language category to any page you create; at least in main, Index and File namespaces. Ankry (talk) 19:42, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Irish Gaelic translation of Dubliners by James Joyce

[edit]

Hello Ankry,

Could you help me make my translation of Dubliners available on the Irish Wikisource page? I followed the advice given by Xover on my Leibide page and transcribed my translation to an existing copy of the original Dubliners on Wikisource. This was to make it available for verification by someone else. I finished this in 2020 but since then nothing has happened. I am worried that it will end here. If I have understood the instructions correctly, then I have done everything I could to get this published on Wikisource. Is there any way you can help to move this along? I have also contacted Xover and Jon Harald Søby but they do not seem to be available to help.

Leibide (talk) 13:12, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Leibide: I am sorry, I seem to have dropped the ball on this. I am available to help, you just may have to nag a bit since I am not usually on Multilingual Wikisource. @Ankry: I'm kinda in over my head on Multilingual Wikisource so if you have the spare cycles it would probably be best if you helped Leibide out, but I know you've got rather a lot on your plate already so feel free to send it my way and I'll try to muddle through. Xover (talk) 16:41, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leibide: I have created basic content page and the first section page. Please check what fixes are needed (you may need to make some translations, eg. "Refereces", maybe license templatesl the author page in Gaelic may be needed, etc.), You may also need yo check the stylibg, formatting, etc. You can try to create the subsequent section pages yourself. Feel free to ask if any problem. Ankry (talk) 16:58, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for replying to me. I am delighted to hear from someone about this. One question- where are the basic content page and the first section page you have created? It's not this, is it: Index:1917 Dubliners by James Joyce.djvu?Leibide (talk) 11:34, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leibide: Muintir Bhaile Átha Cliath And linked from the table of content there. Ankry (talk) 12:30, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I feel it is important to mention that Xover replied to me on his or her userpage on 27 June but I failed to read their message. He/she kindly agreed to help me at that point but I didn't even notice. If you could find the time to help me instead though, this would be great. There is no hurry with this - so long as isn't forgotten forever as I had feared!Leibide (talk) 18:17, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I see the content page now. I was blind!Leibide (talk) 21:00, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leibide: I do not think English titles are appropriate there; I just have created only the forst section page as I do not know how to translate English "References" to Gaelic. If you or someone else translates this, I can create other pages as well. Or you can do it yourself using the first one as a copy/paste/fix model. Ankry (talk) 07:07, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
This is great new. I am very happy that it is near completion. I will fill in the other pages myself now that I know how. I see that they all point back to pages in the index to the English transcription: for example the content page you created has pages index="1917 Dubliners by James Joyce.djvu" from=7 to=9/. I will do the same for the other pages. I am happy enough with the style format too. I would probably like to delete the page numbers on the content page though as these are meaningless. For example the first story, The Sisters, points to page 7 in the book that was transcribed. I would like to add an introductory page if that is alright with you. For the moment, I have just stuffed it into page 6 of the Index:1917 Dubliners by James Joyce.djvu page for you to see. It has an English translation at the bottom. There is one other thing that I would like to do: I would love to add a Wikisource:DoubleWiki_Extension to each page in the translation. I've read the help section on how to do this but I still don't understand it very well. Could you help me with this when the time comes?Leibide (talk) 17:44, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leibide: Note, that if it is not yours, anonymous Wikisource user's, translation, then we need a written CC-BY-SA 3.0 license permission send to Wikimedia VRT team by translator. Instructions can be found eg here. Otherwise, we cannot host the translation for legal reasons. Ankry (talk) 17:54, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
If which is not mine? The introductary page I'd like to add or the entire translation of Dubliners?Leibide (talk) 19:26, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leibide:As you claim this to be translation by Domhnall Nagreine, we need a written CC-BY-SA 3.0 permission from Domhnall Nagreine, not from User:Leibide who can grant it on-wiki. Ankry (talk) 19:31, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
yep, otherwise it would be a copyvio, sorry to have to say this. Cheers -jkb- (talk) 19:59, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I certainly haven't made things simple here for myself. Domhnall Nagreine is just a pen name. My real name is Ciarán Eiffe. And then my Wikisource username is different again: Leibide. I hadn't thought of the problems this would cause when I set up the username. I really would like to use the pen name Domhnall Nagreine instead of my real name. I can stay anonmymous that way. Plus I like this pen name. I will need to complete a written CC-BY-SA 3.0 permission form though. The interactive release generator makes it easy. I have a question first though, in case I complicate things further: what name should I give in the interactive release generator? It is a multiple step form. If I give my real name (at the beginning of the proccess), I am afraid that I can not then use the pen name. If I give the pen name, I am afraid that it will not be valid.
@ Leibide, do you have an officialo web site or does Domhnall Nagreine have an official web site? If yes we coul clear this with the Help of OTRS. -jkb- (talk) 20:57, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid I don't have an offical web site. As for Domhnall Nagreine, this is just a totally made-up name I created.Leibide (talk) 21:05, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@-jkb-:In case this helps, I have already uploaded the translation on archive.org and used this pen name.Leibide (talk) 21:26, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
