Wikisource:Vote on enabling the ProtectSection extension

From Wikisource

Note: Given the large amount of support this extension received, I requested it to be activated on all sites. ThomasV 10:06, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The request is here: http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4375

The purpose of this page is to determine whether there is consensus about enabling the ProtectSection extension in Wikisource subdomains.

What is ProtectSection?

[edit]

This extension allows sysops to protect parts of a page, while allowing normal users and anons to edit other parts of this page.

Text to be protected is delimited by <protect> tags. Only sysops are allowed to modify text inside those tags, or to add/remove those tags.

Why?

[edit]

Currently, if we want to protect a text, the only option is to freeze the whole page that hosts it. When a page is frozen, normal users cannot improve its formatting anymore. This all-or-nothing situation refrains sysops from protecting texts.

This extension will allow sysops to protect texts against vandals, while giving all users the possibility to change the formatting of the page, add or update categories, interwiki links, templates, etc. It will give us the possibility to protect content while keeping formatting open to everyone.

Why a vote?

[edit]

The extension was posted here: http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4375. It is now installed in cvs.

However, developers do not want to enable it unless there is a consensus for it.

Vote

[edit]

Please indicate whether you support or oppose enabling this extension. Please also indicate your number of edits in each subdomain. Voters with less than 50 edits and anonymous voters will be discarded.

The implementation of the feature has no incidence to the policy with which the feature will be used. This policy has to be decided locally by each language.

you may use this page to count your edits: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~kate/cgi-bin/count_edits

  19. Oppose, as I would sometimes like to fix errors (or if the error is in the actual text, add [sic]), or add a wikilink. If the text is protected I cannot do that. If there are problems with vandalism, the whole page should be temporarily protected. --SPUI 15:15, 23 January 2006 (UTC) (~200 edits)[reply]

  21. Support The 'Why' is confusing - The stated intent is to protect texts, but as described, it allows whatever the admin chooses to put in the tags to be protected...
