Norwegian wikisource 1000+ articles

[edit]

Just passed 1000 articles on the Norwegian wikisource a few days ago. I saw a link further up about an ongoing discussion about the front page, does that mean it wont get updated? KristofferAG 16:36, 11 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Portuguese version

[edit]

It's written "a biblioteca livre", but it should be "A biblioteca livre". Pikolas 01:45, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Corrected, thanks. --Zyephyrus 17:55, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. The Tamil Wikisource crossed 1,000 pages a few days back. Please update. - கரிகாலன் (my user ID in the Tamil Wikisource).

Russian Wikisource has more than 100 000 articles

So the number above the logo must be changed and russian link moved to “100000” where english and chinese wikisources are.EUvin 18:52, 21 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The portuguese wikisource has 83+. Why the link to this language is below the deutsch version, that has only 44+? It's wrong... No? --MisterSanderson 01:10, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

I'm looking at this page using the secure server at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/sources/wiki/Main_Page. Normally when you're in the secure server, links to other Wikimedia projects should also go to the secure server, but here they don't. All links to independent Wikisources at Template:Wikisource languages and Template:TopTenCircle go to the normal server. And it's not just those templates or just the Main Page. When I make a link like s:de:Faust, it takes me to http://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Faust rather than https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikisource/de/wiki/Faust. Can that be fixed? —Angr 06:59, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Main page pseudo namespace?

Persian

[edit]

Persian Wikisource currently has more that 22,056 pages, and it should be on that circle at center of Main Page instead of Polski or Arabic. --ZxxZxxZ (talk) 14:08, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Instead of Arabic maybe; the Polish numbers are out of date, and Polish Wikisource now has over 32,000 pages. Chinese has over 106,000 pages and it's not in the circle either. —Angr 14:16, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

What is the interlingual Wikisource for?

[edit]

So, there's an interlingual Wikisource. Unlike wikipedia.org, it seems to be for something other than just a portal between the different languages. But what is it for? I'm not sure, and that information really should be on the Main Page somewhere... --Philosopher Let us reason together. 16:22, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

In addition to being the portal between the different languages, it also serves as the Incubator for Wikisources, hosting languages that don't have their own domains yet and perhaps never will. —Angr 23:37, 20 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Philosopher, I think a Main Page with such an information would be a very desirable thing indeed. I’d dream of something understandable in every language, an image with a source, brooks growing from the source and expanding to lots of streams and rivers, and a few simple words to explain. Who can make that? --Zyephyrus (talk) 07:01, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, the idea is good. On the other hand, the presen main page seems good as well. We could try to make a compromise: the main page will stay as it is, with the little difference, that we add there some short links in some more languages ("What is this project?"), linking to a new page, where we can (in short) describe, what the Oldwikisource is. When we do it on the main page, it will be probably disturbed. -jkb- (talk) 14:58, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, I have made the beginnig: I created the Template:Oldwikisource, which can be inserted on the main page (now it is commented) and linking to the new page Wikisource:Oldwikisource, whre we can explain very shortly, what the Oldwikisource is. I have just started in about three languages, if you like it so pls continue otherwise we can do something else. These changes do not affect the main page as the template is not in function yet. Regards -jkb- (talk) 07:58, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Do we have to call it "Oldwikisource"? I've always hated that name. This project isn't deprecated. We should call it Multilingual Wikisource. —Angr 15:35, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Might be you are quite right. I used automatically Oldwikisource as it is the name for the interwiki links; in some tools on toolserver it is them sourceswiki; the adress is wikisource .org. Anyway, this we can change every time very quickly. Opinions? -jkb- (talk) 16:02, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion

[edit]

Why don't we just move to the Incubator? --Yrtneg (talk) 03:29, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Because Incubator is intended as a temporary home for languages that don't yet have a project of their own. This is the permanent home for many languages that will never have a project, because they don't have native speakers or an active community of editors or whatever. Also, Wikisource has many features like the Page: and Index: namespaces for proofreading that aren't available at Incubator. It wouldn't make sense to move them there either, since they'd be of no use to other Incubator projects like the Wikipedias and Wiktionaries. —Angr 10:52, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bad ULS webfont (Phetsarath) set by default for Lao

[edit]

Contents written in Lao (language code "lo") do not display properly with the default settings made by the Universal Language Selector (ULS). Without ever asking the visitor (logged on or not), it does not select the system font (that works by default when CSS specifies just the pseudo-font "sans-serif") but attempts to replace it with a webfont. Unfortunaltely, every content explicitly tagged with language code "lo" will force the ULS to specify another font, and the default font (Phetsarath) chosen by ULS is clearly incorrect and does not display anything (we only get zero-width glyphs, nothing is visible).

The default font in ULS for Lao is then clearly wrong (or has only been made for a single platform). I suspect it uses AAT (only works on MacOS X) or Graphite (only works with some rare browsers implementing Graphite in their renderer or with a rare plugin), when most platforms only support the OpenType standard (the OpenType standard is well documented for Lao, there's no reason not to use it), or if this is OpenType, that it uses only some custome Postscript outlines for its glyphs (the standard for the web is to use TrueType outlines; PostScript outlines are only working in browsers with a few renderers, or on MacOS).

This non-working/incompatible font (Phetsarath) should be removed from the ULS, and possibly replaced by another one if a correct (free) OpenType font exists for that script. Note: this bug of the ULS affects the home page of Wikisource which display the native name of the Lao language in the Laotian script.

Demo
  • ພາສາລາວ - rendered without explicit language tagging (use only the default fonts of the browser; works immediately in Windows 7 or MacOS X, but other systems may not have an available font, so you may see square boxes);
  • ພາສາລາວ - rendered with explicit lang="lo" (use the font selected by ULS, which inserts inline CSS code via javascript).
Work-around (but this only works for connected users)
  1. Open the ULS panel using the icon at top of page (just before your user name) to select Lao as the UI language to display
  2. Then open the Fonts tab to replace the incorrect Phetsarath webfont by "use default system font"
  3. Apply changes (this closes the ULS panel).
  4. Reopen the ULS panel again with the icon at top of page to select your prefered language.
  5. And apply changes again (the selected font choice for Lao is still preserved for page contents in Lao, even if the UI uses your prefered language).
