《侠义佳人》自序
凡物不平则鸣。其鸣之大小抗卑虽不同,而其不平之气则一也。金石激而后鸣,人心感而后鸣。吾心之感久矣,无已,其举吾心之所感,而托鸣于《侠义佳人》乎?
吾心之感非一端,而最烈者,则莫若吾女界之黑暗也。吾生不幸而为女子,受种种之压制,考吾女子之聪明智慧,非逊于男子,而一切自由利益,则皆悬诸男子之手,天下之事,不平孰甚?然吾女子未尝言其非也。近今有倡女权者矣,有倡自由者矣,而凤毛麟角,自由者一二,不自由者千万,若欲举吾女子而尽复其自由之权,难矣哉!夫男子之敢施其凌虐,而吾女子之所以甘受其凌虐者,何也?其中盖有故焉:一则男子以为吾女子胆小如鼠,虽受其凌虐,必不敢举而暴诸世;一则吾女子性懒如猫,事事仰赖于人,虽受男子之凌虐,而不敢诉于世。积是二因,逐成恶果。去之不能,拔之不得,辗转相承,演成今日之黑暗女界。其中男子虽为祸首,抑吾女子岂无过欤?谚云:“木腐而后虫生。”果吾女子能如泰西女子之文明高尚,则男子方敬之,畏之,亲之,爱之之不暇,又何敢施其专制手段哉?
作者不敏,不能著书立论,唤醒吾女子脱离黑暗,同进文明,以享吾女子固有之权,故聊为小说体,录以平日所见所闻,复参以己见,错杂成篇。虽不足供大雅一笑,而私心则愿吾女子睹黑暗而思文明,观强暴而思自振,庶几近之矣。《侠义佳人》之所以作也。
