THE GAELIC JOURNAL.

FOLK LORE. The following is a first instalment of one among many legends I collected within the last few years in the Arann Islands. The narrator, John Folan, is a fisherman in Inis Meoḋain, who cannot speak English, as indeed scarcely any of the inhabitants of that island are able to do. There is still a rich store of folk-lore in our western islands, but it is aimost entirely confined to the ex- clusively Irish-speaking population. Cl<ynn Concob4i]i. sjeuL se4in 111 ic ton<vtMin.
