Focal ón Aistritheoir

Seo an chéad shaothar litríochta a scríobh James Joyce. Foilsíodh é i 1914, naoi mbliana tar éis a scríofa, agus is scéal ann féin an doicheall roimh a fhoilsiú. Is é Dubliners an saothar próis is simplí agus is sothuigthe de chuid Joyce. Déantar forbairt ar chuid de na carachtair ann san úrscéal Ulysses.

Chuirfeadh sé gliondar ar mo chroí dá spreagadh a t-aistriúchán seo tuilleadh aistriúchán. Tá aistriúchán Gaeilge de scéal deireanach Dubliners (i. Na Mairbh) déanta cheana féin ag Séamas Ó hInnéirghe as Maigh Eó. D’aistrigh sé A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man agus Ulysses freisin (fuair cabhair ó Bhreasal Uilsean agus ó Shéamas Ó Mongáin le Ulysses). Chuir Inis Gleoire i gcló iad. An Inis Gleoire seo, ní fios dom arbh nuachtán nó tigh foilsitheoireachta é, ach pé scéal é níl ann níos mó dóibh agus is deacair teacht ar na haistriúcháin seo. Seo na teidil:

  • Uiliséas (1991)
  • Cinmhíol an chuilb mar ógánach (A Portait of the Artist as a Young Man 1993)
  • Na Mairbh (1997)

A Word from the Translator

This is the first literary work that James Joyce wrote. It was published in 1914, nine years after it was written, and the difficulty with getting it published is a story in itself. Dubliners is the the simplest prose work of Joyce and the easiest to understand. Some of the characters in it are developed in the novel Ulysses.

It would be a great delight to me if this translation inspired further translations. An Irish Gaelic translation of the last story in Dubliners (i.e. The Dead) has already been done by James Henry from Mayo. He also translated A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses (he got help from Breasal Wilson and James Mongan with Ulysses). Inis Gleoire published them. I don't know if Inis Gleoire was a publishing house or a newspaper, but in any case they no longer exist and it is difficult to find these translations. These are the titles:

  • Ullyses (1991)
  • A Portait of the Artist as a Young Man 1993
  • The Dead (1997)
