MULTIPLICATION.

RULE.- Set down the significant figures of the multiplier under the multiplicand, but set the naughts of the multiplier further to the right than the figures of the multiplicand. Then multiply by the significant figures in the multiplier. On the right of this product place the ciphers on the right of the multiplier. This will be the product required.

EXAMPLES FOR PRACTICE.

3. Multiply 4623 by 40. Ans. 184920.

4. Multiply 56 by 500. Ans. 28000.

5. Multiply 81 by 4000. Ans. 324000.

8 41. When there are ciphers in the multiplier occu- pying any position other than the right side, proceed thus:

1. Multiply 6825021 by 20050. OPERATION. Multiply 6825021, the Multiplicand 6821021 multiplicand, by 5, the Multiplier 20050 right hand significant fig- ure of the multiplier, plac- 34125105 ing the units of the prod- 13650042 uct under the five. Then pass over the two ciphers Product 136841671050 on the left of the five, and multiply by 2 the next significant figure of the multiplier. Place the units of this product under the 2. Add these products together and to the right of their sum attach the cipher on the right of the multiplier. This will make 136841671050, which is the product required.

Rule.—Multiply by each significant figure of the multiplier, beginning to write the product of each figure immediately under it, and neglecting the ciphers. Add these products together and attach to the right of them any ciphers that may be on the right of the multiplier. This will be the product sought.
